Written by Joelly See Toh

What Is Google Tag Manager (GTM)?

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a tool that allows you to centrally manage various tracking tags installed on a website.

By configuring a GTM ID in the AirHost Booking Engine, you can set up various tracking tags through GTM.

For example, GTM can be used for tracking:

  • Google Analytics 4 (GA4) website visits and bookings

  • Conversion tracking for Meta ads (Instagram/Facebook ads)

  • Advertising performance measurement for Google Ads and other advertising platforms

Note:

We do not provide support for creating or operating Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager accounts.
Please refer to Google’s official help pages for guidance.

What You Can Do with GTM

By using GTM, you can send user behavior data from the Booking Engine to external analytics and advertising tools.

  • Access and Booking Analysis with GA4

By integrating with GA4, you can track visits to the Booking Engine, completed bookings, and other user actions.

When a booking is completed, a purchase event is triggered, allowing you to measure bookings as conversions in GA4.

You can also track each step of the booking flow to analyze how far users progress and where they drop off.

For details, please refer to the following help article:

  • Conversion Tracking for Meta Ads

By setting up the Meta Pixel through GTM, you can track bookings made through Meta ads, such as Instagram and Facebook ads, as conversions in Meta Ads Manager.

    Help page: available here

GTM Setup Procedure

1. Create a GTM account

From the GTM admin screen, select “Account” and click “Create Account.”

2. Configure the container

Set the container name. Please enter the domain name as the container name.

Review the Terms of Service. If you agree, check the checkbox at the bottom left, then click “Yes” at the top right.

3. Verify the assigned GTM ID.

A GTM ID will be assigned (e.g., GTM-XXXXXX)...①

An HTML code snippet...② will also be displayed, but in the AirHost Booking Engine, configuration can be completed by entering only the GTM ID, so this code is not required.

4. Register your GTM ID on the booking engine management screen.

From the AirHost Booking Engine admin panel, navigate to “Listing Management” → “Website.”

Enter the previously obtained GTM ID (①) into the “Google Tag Manager ID” field and click Save.

5. Set tags on the GTM side.

For tag configuration in Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics 4 settings, please refer to this help page.

For instructions on setting up tags in GTM and Google Analytics 4, please refer to the following page.

Track Bookings from Meta Ads such as Instagram and Facebook

By configuring GTM in the AirHost Booking Engine and installing the Meta Pixel through GTM, you can track completed bookings as conversions from Meta ads.

The following steps are required:

  1. Register the GTM ID in the AirHost Booking Engine.

  2. Set up the Meta Pixel base tag in GTM.

  3. Set up Meta’s Purchase event, using the booking completion page or the booking completion event available in GTM as the trigger.

  4. Use GTM’s Preview mode and Meta Events Manager’s Test Events to verify that the event is firing correctly.

* Due to browser tracking prevention features and cookie consent settings, the number of reservations on AirHost may not match the number of conversions shown in Meta ads.

Information that can be obtained

The following information can be obtained through AirHost's standard integration:

  • Booking completion

  • Property ID

However, the following information is not available:

  • Booking or transaction ID (transaction_id)

  • Booking amount (value)

  • Currency (currency)

  • Product information such as property or room type (items)

Therefore, while you can track the number of completed bookings, you cannot use booking amounts to measure conversion value or ROAS, or use booking IDs to prevent duplicate conversion tracking.

Track Conversions by Property

The URL of the booking confirmation page contains a "hotel" parameter that identifies the property. By retrieving this value in GTM, you can also track conversions by property.

※ To retrieve the Property ID, you need to configure a separate variable in GTM.

※ Customers are responsible for configuring the GTM and Meta Pixel tags and triggers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Can AirHost configure the Meta Pixel and Purchase event for me?

A. No. GTM configuration must be completed by the customer.

Customers are responsible for configuring settings within GTM, including the Meta Pixel base tag and Purchase event.

For instructions on configuring GTM, please refer to the official Google Help Center or consult your advertising agency.

Q. Can I also retrieve the booking amount when tracking conversions from Meta ads?

A. No. AirHost’s current standard integration does not provide the booking amount (value).

Therefore, while you can track the number of completed bookings, conversion value and ROAS based on booking amounts cannot be measured.
