Written by Joelly See Toh

Overview

What Are Parent-Child Listings (Connecting Rooms)?

Parent-Child Listings (Connecting Rooms) is a feature that allows multiple rooms (Child Rooms) to be grouped and sold as a single room (Parent Room), with availability automatically synchronized between them.

For example, the following configurations are possible:

Pattern A: Connecting Rooms / Whole-Unit Rental

  • Room 101 and Room 102 are sold individually as Child Rooms.

  • Room 101 + Room 102 are sold together as a larger room or an entire-unit rental as the Parent Room.

Pattern B: Standard Stay / Long-Term Stay

  • A room is sold for regular stays as a Child Room.

  • The same room is sold as a long-term accommodation as a Parent Room.

Pattern C: Hostel / Dormitory

  • Multiple beds within a room are sold individually as Child Rooms.

  • The entire room is sold as a Parent Room.

⚠️This feature needs a subscription to “AirHost ONE HMS (Premium)”.

How Parent-Child Listings Work

Parent-Child Listings automatically synchronize availability between the Parent Room and its Child Rooms.

  • When a Child Room is booked: the Parent Room is automatically closed for sale.

  • When the Parent Room is booked: all Child Rooms are automatically closed for sale.

👉 Availability is automatically synchronized between the Parent Room and Child Rooms.

Important Notes Before Setup

  • Parent-Child Listings cannot be configured if the Parent Room has future reservations or blocks.

If the Parent Room has existing future reservations or blocks, the following actions are required before configuring Parent-Child Listings:

  • Future blocks: Delete the blocks, then recreate them after the Parent-Child Listing setup is complete.

  • Future reservations: Temporarily stop sales for all OTAs linked to the Parent Room, then add a room to the same Room Type as the Parent Room. Move the existing reservations to the newly added room. After completing the Parent-Child Listing setup, move the reservations back to the Parent Room.

For instructions on changing the assigned room, please refer to:

⚠️ Because a temporary room must be added, you will need to purchase an additional subscription/license for each additional room.

⚠️ Adding the temporary room will temporarily increase the inventory of the Parent Room's Room Type. Be sure to stop sales on all OTAs while making these changes to prevent unintended bookings.

  • If you use smart lock (IoT) integration, the IoT device must be linked to the Child Room, not the Parent Room.

When a reservation is made for the Parent Room, a PIN code is generated for the IoT lock linked to the Child Room.

The behavior is as follows:

  • Reservation for a Child Room
→ A PIN code is automatically generated for the IoT lock connected to that Child Room.

  • Reservation for the Parent Room
→ No PIN code is generated specifically for the Parent Room. Instead, a PIN code is automatically generated for the IoT lock connected to the Child Room.

The Lock Code tag in automated messages will also display the PIN code generated for the Child Room's lock. It will not be left blank for reservations made for the Parent Room.

Supported IoT Lock Integrations

This feature currently supports the following three IoT lock providers:

  • RemoteLOCK

  • KEYVOX (Blockchain Lock)

  • L!nkey Plus (Linkey Plus)

For more information, please refer to:

  • A Child Room can be linked to only one Parent Room. It cannot be linked to multiple Parent Rooms.

  • Rooms configured with Parent-Child Listings cannot use the Balanced Room Assignment feature.

For more information, please refer to: Balanced Room Usage

Setup Procedure

1. Create or Edit the Parent Room's Room Type

In Room Type Management, create or edit the Room Type to be used for the Connecting Room configuration.

For instructions on creating Room Types and Rooms, please refer to:

2. Create or Edit the Parent Room

Go to: Room Unit → Edit Room. Create or edit the room that will be used as the Parent Room.

3. Link the Child Rooms

Enable Is this a Composed Room?, select the applicable Child Rooms, and click Save.

Availability Control

With Parent-Child Listings, availability control behaves differently from standard room configurations.

  • Room Blocks: Synchronized between the Parent Room and Child Rooms.

  • Stop Sales: Not synchronized between the Parent Room and Child Rooms.

Example: Selling 5 Rooms as Individual Rooms and Connecting Rooms by OTA

This example shows how to configure a property when you want to use different sales units depending on the OTA.

For example:

  • Airbnb: Sell two connecting-room units plus one individual room.

  • Booking.com: Sell all five rooms individually.

Assumed Sales Configuration

Airbnb

  • Listing A → Rooms 102 + 103 (Connecting Room)

  • Listing B → Rooms 104 + 105 (Connecting Room)

  • Listing C → Room 101 (Individual Room)

Booking.com

  • Rooms 101 / 102 / 103 / 104 / 105 are sold individually as hotel rooms.

AirHost Configuration: Room Types

In AirHost, manage the rooms by separating them into the following Room Types.

Standard Room — Individual Room Sales

  • Room 101

  • Room 102

  • Room 103

  • Room 104

  • Room 105

Listing A — Connecting Room

  • Rooms 102 + 103

Listing B — Connecting Room

  • Rooms 104 + 105

Channel Connections

Airbnb

  • Listing A → Rooms 102 + 103 (Connecting Room)

  • Listing B → Rooms 104 + 105 (Connecting Room)

  • Listing CStandard Room (Individual Room) → Map to Room 101 using Room Mapping

Booking.com

  • Link the Hotel Property to Standard Room.

Example of How Availability Works

  • A reservation is made for Airbnb Listing A
→ Both Rooms 102 and 103 are blocked.

  • A Booking.com reservation is assigned to Room 103
Room 102 + 103 (Connecting Room) is automatically closed for sale.

  • A reservation is made for Airbnb Listing C
    Room 101 is blocked.

Risks of duplicate bookings (double bookings)

With Parent-Child Listings (Connecting Room), the risk of double bookings may increase depending on how the rooms are sold and which channels are connected.

In particular, please take extra care when using OTAs that allow guests to book multiple rooms simultaneously.

Impact on Automatic Availability Adjustments When a Double Booking Occurs

When Parent-Child Listings (Connecting Rooms) are enabled, some automatic availability adjustments that normally occur when a double booking is detected are restricted.

For example, suppose the following overlapping reservations occur:

Reservation

Status

Check-in

Checkout

1

Confirmed

1 May

3 May

2

Double Booking

2 May

5 May

Normally, AirHost would automatically adjust availability by reducing inventory by one room for the entire period from May 1 through May 4.

However, when a double booking occurs for a Room Type configured with Parent-Child Listings (Connecting Rooms), the overlapping reservation is not included in the automatic availability adjustment due to the complexity of the Parent-Child Listing inventory logic.

As a result, the availability for the overlapping stay period of May 2 through May 4 will not be automatically reduced.

Important:

When a double booking occurs, please take the necessary action manually.

For example, in the case above, you may need to manually block the rooms for May 2 through May 4, as appropriate, to prevent further bookings.

Notification Settings

If you use Parent-Child Listings, please make sure to enable double-booking notifications.

As described above, automatic availability adjustments are restricted when a double booking occurs with Parent-Child Listings. Enabling notifications will help you identify and respond to double bookings promptly.

Cleaning Tasks

Cleaning tasks are created for the room associated with the reservation.

As a result, the Same-Day Check-in indicator (★) is also determined separately for each room.

For example, suppose a Parent Room is used as an entire-unit rental and has a check-out scheduled for today. If a Child Room has a reservation with a same-day check-in, the cleaning task for the Parent Room will not display the Same-Day Check-in (★) indicator.

The indicator is determined based on the reservation associated with each individual room.
